Four functions -- sensing, working, positioning, and avoiding -- are used to rate the
ergonomics of the relationship between humans and the environment. In a dental setting
that offers multiple choices of positioning (as opposed to a few ergonomically sound positions),
operators are forced to focus on choosing the best position and thus may ignore
strain resulting from being out of position. Likewise, settings that obstruct natural movements
and preferred positions result in strain -- the operator is forced to avoid both objects and the less-than-ergonomic conditions.
The ergonomics of a dental setting are determined by the least number of positions and obstructing objects that cause operator strain while completing an intraoral procedure.
The following presentations illustrate and explain ergonomics in a dental setting.
